Humphreys Law Newsletter, December 2018
Dear all,
Yesterday, Theresa May opened the House of Commons debate on the Brexit deal she brought back from the EU. Next Tuesday, we will see an historic vote by MPs on that deal. Few commentators seem to think that the prime minister will win the vote and diametrically opposed thinkers such as Tony Blair and Boris Johnson unite in speaking against what they say is a bad deal that fails to secure a clean break from the EU’s single market and customs union. Many believe that she could suffer a calamitous defeat (and there was a taste of the inevitable yesterday with defeat for the Government on publishing its legal advice on the withdrawal agreement).
What happens next week is anyone’s guess, who knows how many MPs will vote in favour having first stared into the abyss of ‘no deal’ and pulled back at the last. What is clear is that the outcome of the next few weeks will significantly influence the UK’s direction of travel thereafter in a way not seen since, well, the 2016 referendum.
Notwithstanding Brexit and continuing existential political (if not (yet) economic) crisis, HLaw has carried on closing deals and has a few more to help close by year end. We thought you might be interested to know what we and some of our clients have been up to in Q4 2018.
We’ll be at Bristech Conference in Bristol tomorrow. Bristech is a one-day tech event featuring talks from across the technical spectrum: techniques, tooling, programming languages, frameworks, digital ethics, soft skills/psychology, emerging technologies (including quantum) and the delivery process. We’ll be checking out the latest trends, meeting clients and will be around to catch up if you’d like to learn more about what we do or just talk about exciting things going on at the conference.
Christmas is just around the corner and if you have been a client or supporter of HLaw during 2018 then we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you very much and to wish you a very happy festive season and new year.
All the best,
Henry Humphreys
