ith more and more people setting up businesses and becoming entrepreneurs, those looking to scaleup fast often consider raising money to boost growth. But how do you go about this?

You could start by learning from those who’ve been there and done it, and that’s exactly what a packed audience got to do at the recent ‘Raising your first million’ panel event at WeWork in Paddington, London.

Hosted by Humphreys Law and Waypoint Partners, the room was full of entrepreneurs at various stages of fundraising. Moderated by Nitin Dahad, our head of content, the event kicked off with Siobhan Freegard, founder of Channel Mum, telling her story of how she built and sold her first business, and her experience with her latest £3.5 million series B funding round for Channel Mum.

Then she joined the panel, who then spent the next 90 minutes or so providing their thoughts and inputs on the do’s and don’ts of fundraising, in a highly interactive session fielding questions from an audience keen to take in the valuable tips and advice being given by the panel, who comprised:

  • Siobhan Freegard, Founder, Channel Mum, with her insights into how she got her first investments for both Netmums and Channel Mum
  • Chris Corbishley, Investor, Forward Partners, negotiating with VCs, and the ‘founder’s dilemma’
  • Francesca Warner, Venture Advisor, Seraphim Capital, perspectives on the importance of investing in the right people / team at early stage
  • Alex Duffy, Associate Director, Waypoint Partners, tips on some of the growth metrics that investors look for

Siobhan provided her inspiring and motivational story. She talked about the hard work, struggles, and the significance of her investors. She spoke with such enthusiasm and heartfelt passion, that everyone hung on to her every word, captivated and inspired.
